TOIL BOSTON Storyboards Play Video
Description
Toil, a Boston based broadcast design studio gave us free reign and a blank canvas to create the storyboards and graphical elements for an experimental piece emotive of their namesake. With a limited, but bright color palette in mind, and a love for all things from the Japanese Edo Period, it didn't take us long to narrow down our concept to the hard working, sword-wielding samurai. The idea was to show a samurai warrior in his element, taking a magical cube of unknown origin and pounding it into a sword. The cube reacts
to each stroke of the hammer culminating in the release of colorful custom elements. Then we see the samurai taking his new sword for a test run in a surreal bamboo forest. As he skillfully slices through the forest and sheaths his sword, the bamboo trees come apart for the name reveal.

The project started with rough pencil sketches of the samurai's armor and his habitat. These were then fine tuned with more detailed sketches of the ornate patterns on the samurai's armor, but more depth was needed to really get the samurai's stance down.
For this Stephanie then shot Linton with a Nikon D90 in various samurai poses substituting an umbrella for a sword. The sketches and the photographs were then brought into illustrator and photoshop and reconstructed into the beautiful purple and white themes of "Samurai".

After the storyboards were approved, we deconstruct and reconstruct the storyboards
into animation-ready assets and custom particle elements for Toil's talented team of animators to put to motion.
